Recently came across a John Michael Godier video that contains an account of Aristotle observing a green star. My first thought was back to a radiolab episode that postulated that Homer had no word for the color blue, which is why he described the sea as 'wine colored.' I know a considerable amount of time exists between Homer and Aristotle, but would the latter have a word to describe the light of a blue star? Would blue have been recognized as a separate color in Aristotle's time?
Would Aristotle have had a word for the color blue?
Ah, here's the thing: It's complicated. (Just like everything in history!) More can always be said about the Ancient Greek treatment of colours; for the meantime, here's u/KiwiHellenist going into how they treated what we call 'blue'.
