Books on the VoC or the East India Company

by Felix_Smith

I am searching for good books on the Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie, the britisch East India Company and other trading companies like those. I'm not looking for a superficial overview I need something which explores the topic or part of it in depth organisation, key figures, contracts etc. The more academic the book the better. The Book can be in either German, English or French. I guess if nothing else is available I could probably read a book in Dutch too. Would be very thankful for anything you can think of.

For the British EIC, Philip Stern "The company-state: corporate sovereignty and the early modern foundation of the British Empire in India" (2011) is fairly exhaustive. Nicholas Dirks "The Scandal of Empire: India and the Creation of Imperial Britain" is good for the domestic side of the equation (i.e. EIC and internal politics), though he also is making a larger argument about empire so taking a wider view.

The Anarchy by William Dalrymple is a great look at the East India Company. It’s quite a tome so be ready for that! Took me some time to read but quite engaging and Dalrymple is a pro when it comes to the Mughal Empire and their interactions with the Company.
