Where can I find information about Kanem Bornu, especially in the economic and military areas?
Here are some very good books on Kanem bornu:
The Diwan revisited Book by Augustin Holl: this book is an extremely good book on Kanem bornu. It’s also the most informative. It basically is Augustin Holl’s (the author) interpretation of the Diwan/Girgam chronicle (the royal chronicle of the kings (both containing info on the Duguwa and sayfawa dynasty) of Kanem bornu empire.
A Sudanic Chronicle: The Borno Expeditions of Idris Alauma (1564-1576) According to the Account of Ahmad b. Furtu: this is basically a translation of the manuscript made by Mai Idris alooma’s Imam (Ahmad Ibn Furtu) containing info of the campaigns of Mai Idris Alooma.
Sudanese memoirs Book by Richmond Palmer: now this book is actually pretty problematic because this book was written by a colonial supervisor (which means that this book probably does have some colonial ideas asserted into it) however, this book does contain a translation of both the Manuscripts written by Ahmad Ibn Furtu containing the info of the Sayfawa (rulling class of Kanem-bornu) wars with the Bulala as well as translations of contemporary external Arabic texts from certain Arabic authors regarding Kanem.
Studies in the History of Pre-colonial Borno: this is also a great book for the history of Kanem-bornu. It contains the translations of various letters written by certain Kanem-bornu rulers to various North African sultans as well as just general information
If you want help on the economic history and military history of Kanem-borno. I believe I could help you out on that in the DMs.
