Recent graduate with a BA in history. I’ve been applying to other places outside of history, but no new job yet. Any ideas or possible fields to look into outside of history. Definitely can apply skills from history such as research, analysis, organization, writing, etc.
How did I find a career? I got lucky. When I finished my Ph.D., I had two job offers: a contracting job as a researcher at a museum, and a 3/4 time teaching position at a small college in rural Pennsylvania. I got offered the research job because I had a chance meeting in an elevator that led to me getting to contribute to the project I was later hired as a researcher for when I was a grad student, and I had ended up at the same dinner table as the supervisor who hired me for that job during a conference as a grad student. So, basically, two chance meetings got me a subsistence-wage job with no benefits, where I spent 2.5 years on that grind before getting hired as a full staff member.
I don't really know what to advise you to do only holding a B.A. Almost all history-related jobs are going to require an M.A. or Ph.D. The issue with applying for non-history jobs with a history degree is that you have a lot of "soft" skills (research, writing, etc.), but not a lot of hard skills (e.g. programming). You're going to have to think hard about how you can market those skills and the types of jobs where you could put those skills to work. My plan if I didn't get a job after finishing my Ph.D. was to go into insurance, and I know a couple of people who have done that. Secondary teaching and government work seem to be popular options as well. I don't know if any of that appeals to you, but they're ideas at least.
