At one point in time, the American conservative party was named the Democrats, and the progressive party was named the Republicans. It was, in fact, the Democrats who fought for slavery in their civil war over slavery in the 1800s.

When did the switch occur where the democrats became the progressive party? Was it a gradual change over a decade, or some abrupt change? What was the reason for basically a switch of names?
