What are some good jobs I can get with a Bachelors in History?

by chrestorpherson

Hello, I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I’m just throwing darts right now. So I’m a history major with a minor in education, and I’m hearing a lot of horror stories about the salary of a teacher, especially in my state. This is precisely the reason my major is history, in case I can’t pay the bills with my teaching job, I can find something related to my bachelors in History. However, I hear alot of horror stories about not finding a good job with history also. I’m just wondering if anyone can assure me that I’m not majoring in the wrong thing, because I love history but I also love the idea of supporting myself. If anyone could tell me of some good jobs I could get with a Bachelors in History I’d appreciate it. Thanks

Will probably be deleted, but you can usually get jobs with large companies and governments, as they want people who can quickly read large amounts of text and provide concise, understandable summaries of that text. This work is not in history however.

There are also jobs you can do as a public historian, and some large companies want historians or archivists - a major shopping chain here hired a historian for their fiftieth anniversary, for instance. One of my lecturers had worked as a public historian for some time before returning to academia, writing reports and investigating wooden bridges across the state.

You should ask your university, mine has a whole heap of info for graduates about where to find work relating to their degrees.

I have a history BA. I wouldn’t change my college experience for anything but I don’t use the particulars of my degree in my line of work. I took a civil service job at 22. I’ve been doing it for nearly 16 years the money is decent and the benefits are good. I read a lot of reports and paperwork so my background in writing term papers is what I really use. Good luck
