I really liked Stephen Kotkin's lectures on Stalin, they are amazing. Are there any lectures like his, that are very entertaining and interesting about WW1 or perhaps the aftermath?
Hi there, not a terribly frequent commenter on here but considering WW1 is my passion I'd love to fill you in on some possibilities. I have not seen Stephen Kotkins lectures but if you're a fan of long-form chronological series.
TheGreatWar with Indy Neidell on YouTube is a personal favorite of mine. He goes through the entire war week by week summarizing the events in "real time" as though it were a news broadcast with rimary source photography and video from the rough period. It's rather highly regarded. If you're on the go and looking for something similar in style and depth I recommend The History of the Great War as a podcast. Much less episodic and typically goes into a summary of an event rather than a weekly summary of all events, but it's a little easier to get your head around the highly confusing circumstances in the first World War. These are shows that will take weeks to get through but do provide an incredibly rich and detailed history of the war.
Regarding the aftermath, Indy Neidell and the Great War team continued into WW2 on a channel called "World War Two". Covering the interwar period through a series called "Between 2 Wars" on the WW2 channel. The associated WW2 week by week series has also begun if that tickles your fancy.
Hi there anyone interested in recommending things to OP! While you might have a title to share, this is still a thread on /r/AskHistorians, and we still want the replies here to be to an /r/AskHistorians standard - presumably, OP would have asked at /r/history or /r/askreddit if they wanted a non-specialist opinion. So give us some indication why the thing you're recommending is valuable, trustworthy, or applicable! Posts that provide no context for why you're recommending a particular podcast/book/novel/documentary/etc, and which aren't backed up by a historian-level knowledge on the accuracy and stance of the piece, will be removed.
