I am from Northwestern New Jersey, and while I'm familiar with the English names of features of the landscape, animals, plants, etc, I have no idea what the native peoples of the area (I believe the Lenni Lenape) would have called them. Is there any real way I could find out, or has that knowledge essentially been lost?
Delawaretribe.org has info about events and they also sell books including The Lenape or Delaware Indians by Herbert C. Kraft. The book has a section with some words and pronunciation including some animals and land features. Depending on where you are in NJ, Lenape Nations of Pennsylvania might be close to you. They have events as well. I would reach out to these organizations for an opportunity to hear the language and learn more.
