Go to an top-notch graduate school and write a dissertation worthy of publication, which means you write about something that is a fresh subject or at least a fresh take on a subject that hasn't been explored much. You have to be very, VERY brilliant and incredibly well read to even come up with a good topic for a dissertation, and you will have to use primary sources. Since you have to use primary sources, you need to go to school in an area where the sources are nearby. That means you have to not only learn a foreign language if your area of interest is in a non-English speaking country, you also have to learn how to read archaic versions of that language if you want to study history going back much farther than about 500 years. Yes, I once had dreams of becoming a history professor too. Best of luck to you
