Thursday Reading & Recommendations | December 30, 2021

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

I am looking for books related to the Mayan Civilization which cover the following aspects:

  • Reasons of collapse/decline of the Mayan Civilization
  • Effect of climate change on the decline
  • General history of the Mayan Civilization not generally in the context of the Spanish invasions
  • Archaeological history of the Mayans

Note: I have read Arthur Demarest. Looking for books by other authors.

I am looking for books on the military history of imperial China. Generals fine but I’m mostly interested in the Han, Tang, and Song Eras.

I am also looking for good books on Assyria and Ancient Persia.

Hi, first time poster here. I'm looking for a book on Juan Manuel de Rosas.

I'm argentinian so books in spanish or english are fine, and I'm asking here because he's such a controversial figure that there are lots of biases with argentinian authors, so I thought an outside look could help.

I'd be a plus if the way it's written isn't too dense, as I'm not used to reading non-fiction.

I'm looking for books on the history of Christmas carols, either of individual carols or of the singing of them in general.

There's so much poorly done pop history in this area and I'm having a hard time finding reputable scholarship!

Hi to all. Someone knows a book that goes deep into late-medieval perior / renaissance european warfare tactics?

I mean, combinations of pikes and firearms formations, professional large armies, Spanish Golden Century. XVI and XVII centuries, pre napoleonic. It can be from anywhere in Europe, but focused in warfare tactics and not history in general. If it talks about social and economic changes relating them to changes in warfare, better still.

Hello,

are there any good books on the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service, and on naval armour (from around roughly 1850 to 1945)?

Thanks in advance.
