Why did Napoleon reach out to Persia?

Napoleon's main reason for his alliance with the Persian Empire was to establish French control in the Middle-East and to remove the British from India. Napoleon has for a long time spoken of his plans to work with Indian rulers to end British rule in India. Napoleon may not have wanted India for himself, however it was clear he did not want the British to have it. If he was allied to Persia, that gave him an ally closer to India itself and would greatly help in his mission.

Another threat that showed itself in the early 1800s was the mighty bear that was Russia. Both Napoleon and Persia were worried of what Russia could do. Because the Russian Empire bordered Persia, this greatly troubled the Persian Empire and they saw an alliance with Napoloen as a means of protection from the Russian threat; and from 1804 to 1813 Persia would be at war with Russia in the Russo-Persian War. Napoleon and Persia understood that they both needed eachothers help against Russia.

And finally, Napoleon greatly wanted to establish French dominance and influence across the entire Middle-East. Napoleon suggested in 1798 that France should quickly invade Egypt in order to undermine British control in the region. After his defeat in his Egyptian campaign, for the next decade he would try to persuade the Ottomans to ally themselves with him. This quest for French influence led him also to look to Persia. As Persia was one of the most powerful nations in the region, if Napoleon wanted to establish this control, he needed the Persians on his side.

All these reasons were desperate to Napoleon and both him and Persia needed this alliance. Napoleon needed to protect French interests and remove the coalition powers from the region, Persia was his best chance.
