Thursday Reading & Recommendations | January 06, 2022

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Hello, can anyone please recommend military history books on the Russian Civil War, or any specific campaign or battle of the Russian Civil War?

Any books that discuss the equipment and organization of the red army during this period would also be very appreciated.

Could anyone give a recommendation for a history-of-science book on the discovery of penicillin? I presume there are numerous, naturally, but one I found ("Penicillin Man" by Brown, 2004) is unfortunately not available to me in reasonable time.

I need it as a reference work in context of my doctoral research in a related topic (sociology of science), so preferably one still in print or an e-book with page numbering. Need not be too thorough, just to get a reasonably accurate picture of Fleming's work process and scientific development before, during and after his discovery. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Hi! I'm looking for a recommendation for an overview of the history of the Malaysian Chinese from the 1850s to the present for my undergraduate project. I have been relying on Andaya & Andaya and Turnbull, the latter of whom I understand to be the (formerly?) authoritative source on Singaporean history, and I was wondering if anyone here is attuned to the recent scholarly conversations within the field of history regarding the topic. While more traditional historical texts are appreciated, I would also love interdisciplinary or more critical perspectives on the subject matter (such as Sinophone studies) given the more theoretical bent of my work. Thank you in advance!

My friends birthday is coming up and I want to get him a book. He is strong in his faith(Messianic Judaism) but also likes the British Empire. I was thinking about getting him something on the British Mandate in Palestine. Besides the 7+1 books on Judaism suggested in the book list here, does anyone have any suggestion for books on the British Empire, British Mandate, or Judaism?
