Hi, I am doing a history research project on how the government kept the Manhattan Project secret. What history resources do you recommend to find in-depth information about these? They can be online articles or books but not paid versions.
Are you asking about the security around the tech area? The residential? The town? Remote lab sites, such as explosives testing in slightly remote canyons?
Military, MPs, FBI, mounted patrols, civilians, undercover, or bodyguards?
Perhaps the fact that people of Santa Fe and the surrounding pueblos knew that there was something going on but they decided to keep their mouths shut and eyes down? Other than spread the rumor that we were making screen doors for submarines.
A good starting point is https://www.osti.gov/biblio/4555247-manhattan-district-history-nonscientific-aspects-los-alamos-project Free download and it's an official report.
There is also: Voices of the Manhattan Project: https://www.manhattanprojectvoices.org/
And the Atomic Heritage Foundation: https://www.atomicheritage.org/
I'd be more than happy to help if you want specifics.
I work in the Los Alamos Historical Society archives and I love doing outreach and research.
My work in the archives is today and I'll keep an eye on my phone for notifications.
Good luck with your project!
