Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.
I’m looking for medieval microhistories (preferably Flanders, England or France in the high Middle Ages) similar to “Montaillou”, “the return of martin guerre”, and “the last duel”.
Any language is fine.
Recommendations are much appreciated!
Looking for books which cover the first principles and the idea of Color Revolutions. How did they come to be? And what can we deduce about them from other well known revolutions.
My area of interest is the Ukraine conflict. My research points towards it being just another color revolution. I might be wrong so I am looking for reading material around it.
Looking for social, law, crime history of roman empire. Principate era specifically.
I'm looking for books about the late stages of the USSR. I'm mostly interested in Gorbachev and his reforms, Perestroika and Glasnost. Preferably english.
If anyone knows of a book (or multiple) covering this topic, I'd really appreciate a recommendation! Thanks in advance!
Are there any good biographies about John about Stetson the hatmaker?
Looking for a good biography on Nero. I know Griffin is seminal, but that Nero is hotly debated and for example Drinkwater has a more modern approach. Any recommendations? I'm going through the emperors one biography at the time, so I'll only be reading one.
Thanks!
What is the best book on the development and censorship attempts or lack-there-of in Japanese hentai animations?
A historically accurate biography of General Patton?
