Today:
Welcome to this week's instalment of /r/AskHistorians' Sunday Digest (formerly the Day of Reflection). Nobody can read all the questions and answers that are posted here, so in this thread we invite you to share anything you'd like to highlight from the last week - an interesting discussion, an informative answer, an insightful question that was overlooked, or anything else.
Welcome back to another action packed, totally not bot produced, AskHistorians Digest! My favorite day of the week, closely tied with roughly 6 other choices. As usual we’ve got a mountain of stuff for you to enjoy today, plus the usual weekly favorites. Don’t forget to show some appreciation for the hard working contributors, drop them a few upvotes and thanks, and all that good stuff.
We also have a special AMA Tomorrow! A group of AskHistorians experts will be going over to R/Fantasy to take part in an AMA on general history, fantasy and more as part of that subreddits StabbyCon event that’s been going on all week! Don’t miss it, and bring all your questions.
Get some book ideas in the Thursday Reading & Rec!
The party continues in the Friday Free for All!
And with that I am once more done. I can retreat back into the woods of the internet for another Sunday afternoon, and you all can dive on into some of the great stuff produced last week. Keep it classy out there history fans, and I’ll see you again next weekend!
It's the first Digest of the month, which means it's time for another installment of "The Real Questions", where we take a look at the wilder side of r/AskHistorians! Here, I give a shout-out to people asking the more atypical questions on this sub: questions that investigate amusing, unique, bizarre, or less common aspects of history, as well as ones that take us through intriguing adventures of historiography/methodology or niche/overlooked topics and moments in history. It's always a wide (and perhaps confusing) assortment of topics, but at the end of the day, when I see them I think, "Finally, someone is asking the real questions!"
Something I had, er, underestimated when I shifted from a weekly digest to a monthly digest is that sometimes, the first day of a month will be early in the week, which means in those cases the "first Digest of the month" will have nearly a whole week's worth of extra content. (Not to mention that February is short, so will next month's be smaller?) So this one is a little more packed than usual, and some of these just feel so long ago now.
Below are my entries for the last month - questions with a link to an older response are marked with ‡. Let me know what you think were the realest questions you saw this month, and be sure to check out my full list of Real Questions.
As always, Sunday is also a chance to show some appreciation for the unanswered questions that caught our eye and made us wish for an answer. Feel free to post up your own, or those from others you enjoyed, and perhaps we’ll get lucky with a wandering expert! My list is a bit short this week because I got busy, so the more folks who join in the merrier.
