We cannot really say ”the regime“ since that is a very broad term. There were different parties with different opinions on such a broad term of subject, especially considering history which is always bound up to be influenced by one’s ideology.
Tough it is safe to assume that Heinrich Himmler was one of the more interested and fervent parties.
But it doesn’t mean that Himmler was undisputed.
An example:
Himmler saw the christianization of Germany as the original sin. Which he blamed on Charlemagne due to the felling of the holy Donar‘s Oak in the year 723 and the massacre on the Saxons. Due to this he came into conflict with Hitler who, during the ”Parteitag der Freiheit“ in 1935, said that the christianization of Germany served as a unifying factor and declared Charlemagne as the historical unifier of Germany. A decision which he later strengthened in private conversation, as recorded in Goebble‘s diary, 15th November 1936.
This prompted Himmler to walk back on his statement.
Himmler later created the Ahnenerbe. The translation being something like ”ancestor’s heritage“. This is a subdivision of the SS which I recommend you read more about if you are interested in this subject. The Ahnenerbe was supposed to support the claim of the superiority of ”the Aryan race“ and also to prove the existence of a millennia old Germanic religion. Due to the Nazis opposition to the Christian faith, this alternative faith would be more compatible with their ideology. Some of these Germanic customs Himmler tried to revive, like special funeral services or trying to prove that Christians and Jews had stolen Christmas from them, by deriving it from Yule.
In 1938 Himmler also centralized all archeological excavations under this newly created institution.
Amongst others there was the (successful, but disputed) search for the remains of Henry the First, or Henry the Fowler and Haithabu, a trading centre in the Early Middle Ages. There were also many prehistorical excavations, such as at the Erdenburg by Bensberg, by Altchristburg in East Prussia, at the Hohenmichele or a barrow by Sigmaringen.
But most of these were only of interest to Himmler to support his belief of the Cosmic Ice Theory . For a period of time it’s creator, Hans Hörbinger, would also work for the Ahnenerbe.
Some other departments and research branches were created, to name a few: History of Indogermanic Faith, the Middle East, Germanic building practices, as well as Medieval and Modern History.
In 1936 the Ahnenerbe joined the popular historical journal Germanien and slowly took it under control.
”The research and securing of Ahnenerbe from grey Germanic prehistory was one of Himmler‘s favorite subjects. Due to this he repeatedly took part at site visits and archeological excavations, using this opportunity to make detailed claims like here - with the support of Wiligut (top)“, the leader of the archive department of the Race and Settlement Main Office, ”in a palatinate quarry in which runic symbols were suspected.“
