I'm sure it was heavily censored and spun but they had to explain what happened to their 4 premier carriers and crews, didn't they?
While more can always be said, /u/lubyak addressed the Japanese homefront response in our Midway megathread from a couple years back.
In short, it was brutally suppressed.
