Could someone please recommend a book that details the history of the breakup of Yugoslavia and the ensuing wars? Or if such a book doesn't exist some other reading recommendations?
The Death of Yugoslavia by Allan Little and Laura Silber handles this topic, as the title suggests.
But the same-titled documentary series is also a must-watch.
I have hardly ever seen a documentary like it because nearly all the main players involved were interviewed for it. It was made in a short window after the war, and before lots of the people involved were pursecuted for war crimes. So you see interviews with Karadzic, Milosovic, and paramilitary commanders when they thought thry were still safe.
This all complemented by fascinating footage of for instance the critical voting sessions within the Yugoslav state council when the break-up was starting. I can't recommend it highly enough.
A bit off-topic, but in the same vein. 2RR (Second Russian Revolution) is not very well known, but also of the same standard about the break-up of the Soviet Union with interviews with all the main political players and in-depth footage of critical parliamentary sessions and so on.
I have previously found answers by /u/BugraEffendi and /u/commiespaceinvader and /u/kieslowskifan, among others, for another version of this question
