I've found a few references where Southwestern tribes used Tomatoes, but it wasn't widespread. Did the Navajo, Hopi, Malibu, etc eat tomatoes?
Tomatoes don't seem to be as widespread as other American crops such as corn. Although they originated in South America, there is no evidence of their culinary use until their arrival in Central America, where seem to be a later addition to Aztec cuisine. Some Spanish sources like de SahagĂșn noted the widespread popularity of tomatoes in Aztec culture, both unripe and ripe, but at that time it seems like the tomato hadn't yet been cultivated into the large fruits we see today and more resembled smaller cherry tomatoes. It seems like they were used more like a flavoring agent than a staple crop, and likely wouldn't have travelled well. Of course nowadays some popular American Indian foods such as frybread tacos (which date back to the 1960s) make use of tomatoes.
