How to decide on a graduate school?

by RakishDissolute

Hello! I hope that this is the correct place to post this, apologizes if this is annoying.

I am incredibly fortunate to have recent been accepted to a number of Taught Master's programs in History! I have been a teacher the past few years and am now returning as a student myself in the hopes of one day joining a PhD program and build a life producing/surrounding history.

I am currently struggling to decide between the schools I've been accepted to and struggle to see a difference between them. Besides potential advisor fit, is there anything you think I should value when making this decision?

Thank you so much in advance!

Depending on if USA or Europe (or elsewhere), how do the funding offers compare? The tricky thing about grad school is, you know, paying rent and feeding yourself, especially in 2022 in just about any major city on earth. In the USA, anyway, no funding = no go. Don't put yourself into 200k of debt for a history phd. That won't work out well. Typical funding offers range from fellowships to teaching assignments, or a combo of both.

Second, ask yourself what area you want to work on exactly. You don't have to know precisely, but you need an idea. If you want to do ancient history, for instance, then you should make sure there are several ancient historians there to advise you and work with you.

Third, and related to the first point: quality of life. Where are the schools located? What are rents like? What's the town like? This is more for phd than masters, but still relevant. There are plenty of great programs around the world which are unfortunately in miserable towns/neighborhoods. Remember that you have to live there, have to go there every day, have to eat there, socialize, etc. This is an aspect which is not talked about enough when choosing grad schools.

But in the end: don't fret too much about the choice. Pick the one that feels right and checks the most boxes for you. What matters most is what you do in the program, what you produce to use as writing sample later, the connections you make to profs which will result in good letters of rec, etc etc.
