Well to answer that question, which in itself is based on individual perspective, we must define what history is.

History is the study of the past. Its goal is not merely to just memorize dates, people's names, preserve ancient text and/or items, but to give an explicit look at how past peoples lived and why they lived that way. It is the understanding of why this war happened, why this religion prospered, why this person was assassinated, etc.

So history is the study of the past, so what?

As someone pursuing a career in history, I'd like to "dumb down" the two types of "historians" there are, given the context of the question. I am taking this question as one identifying fact and knowledge as a means of study. This is not meant to gatekeep history in any way, it's merely to say that constitutes actually studying history in an academic setting and what isn't.

There are those that pursue history that seeks to only take historical facts with them, and then there are those that seek to understand those historical facts and develop what is called historical knowledge.

Let's look at an example: World War Two.

An individual prioritizing historical fact would be able to say the simple fact that 50% of all allied munitions, trucks, guns, etc. was produced by the United States. Nothing more on their part would be said, they'd just move on to another fact.

And an individual prioritizing historical knowledge would be able to explain how and why the United States was able to be at that level of production, why the United States took such a leading role in the allied war effort, etc. Then that knowledge breaks off into a more complex web of asking more questions.

Historical knowledge is what makes a historian I would say, as it allows them to have a greater understanding of the time period that they are analyzing and makes it easier for them to produce academic works for others to read.

To hit home my point or summarize it, I would say that someone who merely searches up historical facts without delving into its context and/or reasoning is extremely limiting themselves whenever it comes to the subject of history.
