Earliest evidence for spinning and weaving dates to about 25,000 years ago, with what looks like a woven loincloth of spun yarn engraved on a Gravettian figurine known as the Venus of Lespugue. Actual spun fibres from a dig in Israel date to 19,000 years ago. Evidence of sewing hides, in the form of needles and awls, is about 40,000 years old. Glaciation in the North from 115,000 to 11,000 years ago meant even fairly hairy hominids would have needed additional covering to live in some of the places where their remains have been found.
