Was the killing of French people in Haiti one of the reasons why they had to pay a large sum to France?

No. They paid the French a large sum 17 years after the revolution (1803-1820) because the French basically threatened them with ships, and the Haitian president at that time overestimated his ability to pay off the $150M.

This payment was for France to officially recognize Haiti as its own country, rather than “Lost slave territory”. I will link you to an answer that goes into greater detail in a hot minute, need to grab the link and I’m on mobile.
