Is there any books on Japanese Prime Ministers from 1945-2000?

by VideoGameKaiser

I’ve recently become interested in Japanese politics and was wondering if there was any books on all of the prime ministers or a book detailing the history of the Liberal Democratic Party. Also books or articles about Hayato Ikeda would be great as well.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations! So I wrote on this topic with sources at the bottom. Pekkanen’s book is four volumes of which I only read most of the first and second. There are several others that I might not have included depending on the specific topic.

In one book? Not that I am aware of in English nor Japanese. I only know of the listed below.

Kakuei Tanaka (1972 - 1974)

  • Johnson, Chalmers (1986) Tanaka Kakuei, Structural Corruption, and the Advent of Machine Politics in Japan ARTICLE

Shigeru Yoshida (1946 - 1947, 1948 - 1954) Liberal Party

  • Dower, John D (1979) Empire and Aftermath: Yoshida Shigeru and the Japanese Experience, 1878-1954

Hayato Ikeda (1960 - 1964)

  • Frattolillo, Oliviero (2019) Reassessing Japan’s Cold War: Ikeda Hayato’s Foreign Politics And Proactivism During The 1960s

In general Google Scholar is helpful and might lead to downloadable articles. Also, what exactly do you want to know about Hayato Ikeda? Because if its about the ‘income doubling plan’ or high speed growth, it might be better to look through economic or political economy articles and not focus too much on Ikeda. There are a few on GS.
