What was Jesus doing between the ages of twelve and thirty in his life?

by flossingjonah

When Jesus was twelve he was found in the Temple talking with the elders. He was then a minister at thirty years old. So where was he during those other years in between? What did Jesus do before he became a minister?

/r/AcademicBiblical may be a better place to ask this question. The oldest Christian accounts (the Pauline epistles, the gospel of Mark) make no mention of Jesus' life in any context before his ministry years; the nativity as present in Matthew and Luke is believed to reconcile prophetic traditions rather than serve as an objective account.

Previous suggestion is a good one as there are practically no records about this period of his life.

The early Christmas narratives aside, one observation is that Joseph is never mentioned. Nothing definitive can be said based on an absence of information, but it is sometimes implied that he isn’t mentioned because he is no longer around (death, etc) and the children would have been relied on more for family provisions. An interesting follow up question may be what a typical 1st century widowed Jewish woman might experience?

But as stated -there’s no text to support that, only a notable initial presence, then absence, of Joseph.

After 30 years of age - Jesus is referred to as a carpenter in Mark 6:3. That Greek word can have additional meanings to ‘carpenter’.

That’s a minuscule amount to go on, requires assumptions, but it suggests a motive (widow/single mom) and there’s opportunity (he had a skill set). If we take just the carpenter statement at face value - he may have done what many that age do - worked.
