So Islam is set to have started around 600 AD according to my Muslim boyfriend. He states that Muhammad was the final prophet, and Jesus and Moses were also considered prophets.
Moses was the prophet during the Egyptian empire, but, does this mean Islam was a religion by then? Was it already formalized or would it become that after the Prophet? If it was around, did Egyptians follow Islam or were they not religious at all?
Prior to the rise of Islam the majority religion in Egypt was Christianity. The City of Alexandria was one of the early centers of Christianity. With the rest of Egypt gradually being Christianized. Egypt remained Christian as part of the Roman and later Eastern Roman emipires. Though due to theological disagreements a majority of Egpytian residents followed the Coptic denomination of Christianity rather than Eastern Orthodoxy. After the Islamic conquest Egypt did not convert instantly but rather as part of a gradual process. Tolerance of Christian practice varied between different dynasties and rulers and Egypt remained majority Christian until the 14th century. Even today around ten percent of the Egyptian population is Christian.
Prior to the rise of Christianity, under the Romans, most Egyptians prayed to the traditional Egyptian pantheon. Though there were large Jewish and hellenized populations in the city by the time Rome took control of Egypt. As the Egyptian polythiestic religon existed for several thousand years so to did it;s practices change and and in depth dive into it is something I am unequpped to do and best asked in another question.
