From the video "5 most dangerous jobs in history" at 9:53 you can see a corpse collector from the black death smoking a pipe. Was smoking other substances common place at this time? From a quick google search, smoking from pipes such as the one in this picture had not occurred until the 16th century. What gives??
That image is definitely not from the Black Death of the 14th century. The pipes, the men's clothing and hats, the type of perspective and shading used by the artist . . . all of these indicate that this picture comes from a later date.
The Wellcome Museum in London focuses on the history of medicine, health, and disease. It used a copy of this very image in an article on the history of smoking, indicating that it actually portrays the victims of an outbreak of plague in London in 1665.
