What was the role of the US Supreme Court before it granted itself the right of judicial review in 1803?

I'm not sure what SCOTUS does other than hear cases that result in the affirmation that a law is constitutional or to declare the law unconstitutional. What was is there?

As I wrote here, the common supposition that Judicial Review was not an assumed power of the courts until the Marbury case is in error, and in my opinion the "popular history" of that case is at best misunderstood.
