Can you recommend literature to help me close a knowledge gap?

by theboss1500

Most other r/ doesnt let me ask this. So as a last resort I hope some of you can help me?

I want to learn more about the history of Africa as a continent and more about the African nations history. I realised there is a huge gap in my knowledge her and I want to know more. Can anybody recommend any good literature and/or documentaries about this?

(In swedish if you know any, but in english works to.)

A good place to start with the history of the colonization of Africa in the 19th century is Söndra och härska: uppdelningen av Afrika 1880-1914 by Henk Wesseling. It's very detailed and covers the entire continent in a scholarly way. It is perhaps the best book available on the subject in Swedish, seeing as there are considerably few books on the history of the African continent available in Swedish. There is also a Swedish translation of David van Reybrouck's book on the modern history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, simply titled Kongo - en historia.

The wiki here has a great listing of books about Africa sorted by subject.
