Before the advent of baby formula, wealthy women routinely hired wet nurses. What did poor women do? Would other mothers in a town or family or similar have helped out their lactation-challenged acquaintances for free?
I discovered this answer by /u/asiaexpert from 9 years ago which is exactly on point, but would also be interested in hearing about other places than China if practices were different.
