Best books on Korean history for a dilettante?

by thegeorgianwelshman

Hi again, r/AskHistorians.

I'm going to be moving to Korea soon and know only the most general things about Korean history. My carry-on is already jam-packed with books and I probably only have space for one book on Korean history to help me better understand the culture of the world I'll be living in; can you please recommend for me one dilettante-friendly title?

I don't have any firm ideas about what the scope of the work should be---I suppose anything that gives a comprehensive, functional idea of the country as a whole and its origins and how it came to be . . . well, how it is presently.

Have you looked at Booklist/East Asia/Korea? I'm no expert but I found the first one there, Korea Old and New, to be quite readable.
