I am looking for books that give a general history of social welfare programs in the United States, from the pre-FDR poorhouses to the Affordable Care Act. If such books don't exist, then a history of U.S. social welfare from FDR to Bill Clinton would suffice.
Social Welfare: A History of the American Response to Need (Merrill Social Work and Human Services) by Mark J. Stern was published in 2017 and should include all of that time period including the Affordable Care Act.
