Ancient Egyptians were known for drinking lots of beer because it was more healthy and safe than the drinking water available to them. How did they not get exponentially dehydrated living in the Sahara desert by drinking so much beer? Did excessive drinking severely affect their health?

Unfortunately not true. This is a very common and widespread misconception ("[Historical People] didn't drink water because it had [microbes/bacteria/unsafe in some other way] so they drank alcohol instead"), but it's not true for any people at all. Humans of all times and places have drunk water, and natural water sources are not nearly as bad as the myth makes them out to be.

My usual post is more focused on the Middle Ages, but it's worth reading since it directly addresses this myth. On the specific matter of Ancient Egypt and hydration, u/Osarnachthis points out that yes, they did drink water.
