Any book recommendations regarding the breakup of Yugoslavia?

by vulnerabiility

I’m looking into the concept of failed states and think Yugoslavia may be a good place to start. I’m just not sure what the best starting place here would be. TIA!!

These are my top recommendations for specifically the collapse of Yugoslavia:

  • Sabrina Ramet, Balkan Babel: the Disintegration of Yugoslavia from the Death of Tito to the Fall of Milosevic
  • Laura Silber and Allan Little, Yugoslavia: Death of a Nation

I would also recommend to the following works for a broader understanding of Yugoslavia, each of which cover the collapse in their later chapters:

  • John Lampe, Yugoslavia as History: Twice There Was A Country
  • John Allcock, Explaining Yugoslavia
  • Vjekoslav Perica, Balkan Idols: Religion and Nationalism in Yugoslav States

Lastly, I would advise HEAVILY against Robert Kaplan’s Balkan Ghosts. It’s a very problematic work that perpetuates the “ancient ethnic hatred’s” thesis that Yugoslav specialists have thoroughly disproven.

Hope that helps!
