Being as mighty an empire as Rome was, I'm curious to know what is the furthest extent in the world that someone would have heard of it. If I asked a middle class Japanese or South African person of that time, would he be at least familiar with the name? How about other isolated areas like Siberia or Malaysia?
Here's a couple comments regarding africa: https://reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/5n5owg/how_far_south_into_africa_was_rome_or_the/dc8x3j3
I don’t think Malaysia would have been considered an “isolated area” as the maritime silk route would have to pass through either the Malacca strait or the Kra ithsmus. Plus, Roman coins have been found in Oc Eo, then an entrepot in ancient times. For the Roman coins to reach this area, surely it has to pass through the territories of what will become Malaysia today.
