Do you mean Field Rations?

MREs are a specific American ration and they only date to the 80s. Though they were based on an earlier limited use ration from the 60s. Not a ton of "throughout history" there, and British forces in North Africa. Presumably you mean World War Two? Wouldn't have been issues an MRE of any kind.
