Is there a readable and accurate book on most of the Greek Myths?

by DepressedTreeman

Can anyone recommend a book on the stories of the Greek myths, from the gods to the heroes? I'm aware of recent stuff, like Stephen's Fry Mythos book, but I'm skeptical of it's accuracy and number of myths told.

I and others have given a few recommendations in this thread from last month. Fry is pretty good, in the sense that he is quite up front that what he's giving you is an imaginative retelling, rather than a replication of an ancient text.

Take a look through options mentioned in the thread, and see which ones you think are for you!

Robert Graves - The Greek myths.

Stephen Kershaw - A brief guide to the greek myths.

But honestly I love Stephen Frys versions. All myth is story and story telling, and you can feel the way he tells it he loves and respects it. Even in the ancient times the myths contradicted themselves in different tellings of the story, because each narrator wanted to give their own touch and flourish. So don't worry about accuracy. Just enjoy the story and the art.
