I’m reading a few books on the Middle Ages simultaneously (below). They tilt towards Western Europe and Germanic tribes. Could you please recommend books on Barbarian kingdoms (particularly from CEE) and early Slav history?
Wickham in particular refers to tribe names and “the migration” without further explanation. I’d like to understand the origins of tribes and which countries in CEE each settled.
Books I’m reading:
C. Wickham, Medieval Europe B. Van Loo, The Burgundians S. Winder, Danubia & Germania
Thanks!
While more can always be said, I posted a very essential Anglophone book list as a response to follow-up questions before in: Did slavery exist in Rus before christianization, in what form, and did slavic tribes before and after emergence of Rus ever capture foreign slaves?.
(Added): /u/Steakpiegravy also compiles and recommends much more fuller relevant literature list in: What do we know about early, especially Western, Slavs? Especially before the 9th century, though I'm afraid that some of them are either too expensive or difficult to access without affiliation with the uni's library.
