Best way to memorize the contents of a history book?

I’m currently reading “The Crusades: The authoritative history of the war for the holy land” by Thomas Asbridge. What is the best way for me to retain the info in this book? I enjoy studying the high Middle Ages and wish to learn as much as possible without forgetting.

If I really want to remember something, I’ll make a visual note (drawing, chart, anything that isn’t just words on a page) and pin it somewhere I have to look every day (office monitor, bathroom mirror, on the ceiling in the bedroom, next to the TV). Take things you want to remember about the book and visualize them; it’s good to remember words, but having a picture is even better. I for example have some main Early Iron Age ceramic forms from the region in excavate in sitting directly next to my monitor at work, both for reference and also because I often have to look at them and this helps me pick them out of a crowd when I’m in the field.
