I've not studied history, so I was wondering, if you are looking to learn about something a very specific event such as a journey a king made, where on earth and how on earth would you begin to look? Is it just a case of reading lots and hoping you randomly find what your after? I've been searching for something specific and find bits of random info that I'm after in the most unusual places here there and everywhere, but hardly anything when I specifically search for it, whats the trick to finding out what happened in a specific time in history? like finding sources first hand? I can only ever find small bits of first hand sources and lots of second hand sources which briefly touch on what I'm after but don't give the full story and leave no references.
Have you considered doing a question about the king's journey (or whatever the question on your mind is) or asking for sources in the short question thread?
One issue that might be a problem is that normally, someone studying history will have read a lot about that period already and then be able to target something specific. Having read a lot about that period/subject, in general, provides a basis of knowledge of the sources so that even if you can't recall instantly where something is, you have a sense of the right places to search and you might even remember the incident. Both in terms of primary and secondary sources.
So for my era, I would have a look at the records of the King and, having an idea of the year, the chronological overview of the era. Perhaps the journey isn't there because, in the grand scheme of things, that journey wasn't important. Who else was on that journey to whom it mattered, to which the journey reflects on them? I would look at the figures I knew were involved. Secondary sources, who is likely to have written about it based on the author and what the books/paper is called, what I know it covers and does not. That at least should trim it down.
I could also use keywords to search through PDFs that I have of papers and books, do a search on jstor to see if they have any paper that might help, a google search to see what pops up (use with care given bad information on the internet) and go through the likely book's index. I'm also quite happy to go to others who I think might be able to track it down and go "hey, I need help finding something."
It might be worth you having a look at the places you did find bits of information that you wanted. Most of the time there will be a good reason for why that information is in that text and if you can work out the reasons where those texts have it, that may help focus the search by looking for similar themed works. If any of them are papers or books, there should be references somewhere, if not in that or nearby passages then look at what texts are being discussed. Also look for a bibliography for a list of texts used and see if any catch your eye as worth exploring further to dig into that subject.
I do think the most helpful advice I can give as you are looking for something specific is either ask in the short questions thread+next Thursday Reading recommendations for sources/books on the subject in the hope someone can provide something to start you off. Or (and might be worth it if you don't get an answer for sources) making a question about the subject, any answerer can provide sources to help you further explore the subject.
