Do we know why the Ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphs, a remarkably time consuming and inefficient form of writing?

Hieroglyphs were used partly because they were difficult and time-consuming to write. After all, they were not used for everyday texts but rather ornate objects and monumental inscriptions – temple pylons, rock-cut inscriptions, stele, and so on – intended to impress the viewer with their beauty and complexity.

There's always more to be said on the topic, but I've touched on this in a couple of previous posts.
