I ask that answers be without patriotic bias please. I understand that ofcourse, the United States and Canada did, but if Britain brought in their allies to assist with the war effort, did Britian assist the effort of their allies ?
The Royal Navy provided a significant proportion of the escorts that fought the Battle of the Atlantic throughout the entirety of the battle, suffered more losses than the other Allied navies, and sank somewhere in the region of 250 submarines in the North Atlantic alone. It fought from the first day of the battle in 1939, through to its last day. For more information on how the RN fought the Battle of the Atlantic, you could see this answer on British convoy doctrine, this answer on Britain's use of aircraft carriers to protect convoys, or this one on the difficulty the RN had finding convoy escorts. While more can always be said this answer provides a general overview of the battle and some of the RN's contributions to it.
Royal Navy, ahhhh, sense of pride in my whole body goddamnit :D :D
I am indian by the way, so the patriotic bias is ruled out :)
Britain played an integral role in the BOFA. All those merchants were meant for the massive British Empire. You also had India, which sent its resources by the Suez Canal, from Bombay (Mumbai today), Calcutta (Kolkata today), Cochin (Kochi), Vishakapatnam (Vizagpatnam), Madras (Chennai).
What was the RN best at? Having beefy ships. Here's a good list of them:
Hood (Admiral Class Battlecruiser, the largest ever built in the world. Only one was built, that too in Australia. Sunk by Prinz Eugen and the Bismarck in the BODS. It was a shame that the government didn't do the required upgrades for the ship.)
Nelson and Rodney (Nelson Class Battleships, named after Admirals Horatio Nelson and George Rodney. 9 turrets 16 inch, torpedoes and lots of secondary guns. Could this day get any better :) sunk the Bismarck along with Suffolk Class Cruisers and King George VI.)
The Illustrious and Courageous Class Aircraft Carriers, oooh yea now Germany starts to feel the damn heat.
Elizabeth Class Battleships (eg Malaya, Barham, Queen Elizabeth, two more whose names I do not remember.) Dreadnoughts of WW1
Also the Revenge Class Battleships (Ramilies for instance. At an instant, the two Scharnhorst sisters Gniesnau and Scharnhorst were given direct orders to not engage with capital ships. Ramilies was escorting a merchant convoy then.)
And who can forget the Renown Class Battlecruisers.
And King George VI Battleships (Prince of Wales, Anson, Howe, King George VI.)
This is a comprehensive list of one of the main fighters of the RN.
Also the RN, struck a deal with Portugal to use the crucial Azores Islands to hunt and sink German U Boats.
Britain was the main reason behind the victory in the BOFA. Sure, the US has economic and industrial power (partially why the US GDP is the largest is because of British payments for goods), but Churchil was the steering wheel and tyres himself. USA had the economic power and technological (ready about Hedy Lamarr, really interesting story), but UK had the willpower to crush Germany. Heck, even the Soviets played a role here. I think it was HMS Edniburgh, I do not remember, which was carrying 4.5 tons of Soviet Gold, but got sunk unfortunately.
Britain also, because of its massive empire, could corner Germany from all sides, especially Canada. Britain did a lot to assist the war effort for its fellow allies. Burma, Dutch East Indies/Australia, the Island Hopping Campaign, Singapore, etc. But unfortunately this also came at a price - Bengal Famine for example, and Churchill's racist demanor towards India, has always left that dent in his legacy (at least in the mind of an Indian).
See, France had collapsed, because no one bothered to listen to CDG. Cmon, the guy is a legend, he is the mastermind behind developing the French Armed Forces. Petain came out to be a total traitor unfortunately, from the Lion of Verdun to the Puppet of Berlin running Vichy France. Francois Darlan as well.
So, the US lost one CAPITALIST country. Because the USSR would not reach at par with the US (in discussions or whatnot), because Stalin always had a backdoor agenda no matter what. Read about the race between Marshals Konev and Zhukov, dubbed the Race to Berlin :D
Left was UK, who was going to listen to Washington. Washington needed UK's territory to fight against Japan and the Imperial Navy, and the UK needed the massive industrial power of America. I used to play this game called World Conqueror 4 as the UK, always winning, because of the far reach of its terorrites. Granted it is not historically accurate, but you get the idea.
I hope I have answered your question in depth desired. Please DM me if you would need mor einformation, or any other historical questions you have. Will be happy to answer.
