I am aware of the criticisms of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, but I really enjoyed the flow and breadth of the work and specifically the audiobook.
I'm going to listen to The Coming of the Third Reich soon, but I'd also like something about the Asia-Pacific aspect of the war that's respected, but still an engaging listen.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Neptune's Inferno, both by James Hornfischer. Hornfischer was a fantastic writer, can't say enough good things about his work. As far as the naval aspect of the Pacific goes, I think he's pretty hard to beat. It isn't dry or overly technical like you can sometimes get with nonfiction work, it feels like you're reading a fiction novel at times. There's typically a good bit of setup at the beginning which can turn some people off, but once things really get going, Hornfischer will have you hanging onto every word and you just can't put the book down (or stop listening, in this case).
And for something from the Japanese perspective, Japanese Destroyer Captain by Tameichi Hara.
