I am interested in reading about more figures who were condemned by those in power for the creation of knowledge that challenged the status quo. His story is quite a bit different than you think—the Church generally was interested in/supported research into heliocentrism (although Copernicus's actual model was wrong due to assuming circular orbits, which caused plenty of mathematical problems that astronomers at the time rightly objected to). Galileo got in trouble for publishing independent interpretations of the Bible (very not allowed for a non-theologian at the time) and for insulting the Pope, after being actively supported by the Church for many years.
