I’m looking for history books to read about the Pacific Northwest. I’m particular interested in the history of Washington State, the culture/history of native tribes in the region, the development of fur trapping/settling, and the ecology/geology of the region.
Vine Deloria's Indians of the Pacific Northwest: From the Coming of the White Man to the Present Day is a classic and had a new edition come out a few years ago. I could also recommend the many works of Cecelia 'Svinth' Carpenter's, a Nisqually historian. To name one, Where the Waters Begin: The Traditional Nisqually Indian History of Mount Rainier is less of a traditional academic work but is a wonderful exploration of the intertwining of history and ecology for specifically the Nisqually. Native Seattle by Coll Thrush is a look at indigenous continuities from early white settlement to the present day in urban Seattle.
I'd also recommend Pacific Connections: The Making of the U.S.-Canadian Borderlands for a look at the often overlooked transpacific side of settlement in the region, looking at the complex dynamics of immigration and race and the region's early labor movement.
People of Cascadia by Heidi Bohan is a nice introduction to Indigenous folks in WA, Central/Southern BC, Western ID, and Northern OR.
Puget's Sound: A Narrative of Early Tacoma and the Southern Sound by Murray Morgan is a great book about the the early development of the south sound area. I'd also give Skid Road: An Informal Portrait of Seattle and The Last Wilderness : A History of the Olympic Peninsula (both also by Murray Morgan) as great pieces on their respective regions.
