Why is Vietnam the only country that adopted Sinitic culture in the Southeast Asia?

We don't know for sure, but the current theory goes something like this:

The Chinese model of state had the Chinese Emperor at the centre with everyone else subservient to him. This was not attractive to Southeast Asian rulers because it would have meant accepting a lower status. The only exception was Vietnam as it was conquered by the Chinese and directly administered as part of the empire.
