So if a German soldier was sent to check if Jews were hiding in a house and was caught lying that they weren't, what would have happened to him?

this is a difficult question, as far as im aware there are no surviving records of this ever happening, depending on where you were located and the time period this raid on your house would also be done by a different group

its hard to imagine any soldier actually risking their lives doing this exact scenario tho, since almost everyone in the SS and Gestapo spend the past few years being completely introdicated by propaganda, an action like this was eventually going to be found out about

there are alot of records of german officers actually trieng to help people tho, but they did it in a smarter way, im thinking of Carl Lutz, Karl Plagge, Helmut Kleinicke and many others

these actions consisted of providing protective papers, warning jews about upcoming round ups, helping people escape, setting up "concentration camps" where people were actually treated well, or sometimes actually hiding people in their own buildings

but even these people were unable to prevent alot of people being transported or killed

if you like any more clarity about this subject im more than happy to write alot more about it but this was a difficult question to answer
