Why did couples start families during the WW2?

by pipsta2001

I'm writing a book and my main character was born in 1942. I've been doing some research into British WW2 war babies but I can't find much information about couples starting families during the war.

I would like to know how and why soldiers managed to get time off to go back home, if most pregnancies/families were planned during this time and why?

Thank you

OP, you might get some quality answers if you bound this geographically. The answers will be quite different for Germany, the United States, the Soviet Union, India, etc. In the United States we see the baby boom (increase in birthrate) beginning in 1943, which supports other evidence showing many couples were attempting to start families prior to extended overseas deployment.
