How much authority and loyalty did the Afghanistan monarch actually have outside the major population centers before the coup in 1973?

Before 1973 it wasnt much of a modernising state. The Government never really did much action in the rural areas so there kind of isnt an answer to this question. Only after the modernising and authoritarian regimes that came after 1973 and 1978 did the Rural population begin resisting their authority. Before 1973 there wasnt much of a government presence or interests.

Closest thing i can say to this answer is that Afghanistan's monarchy has had rebellions before in the 1940s and early 20th century.
