When medieval mobs wielded torches, what sort of torches did they wield? Were they handy?

You describe scenes from movies, they are fictional. In reality, the torch was a stick, at one end of which tarred straw or tow was wound. It was set on fire and it burned for a long time and quite brightly, although it smoked heavily. No one would wave it in the crowd, torchbearers usually ran ahead of the column or to the sides, lighting the way.
